Ryan Shaw, a disillusioned journalist in the provincial English town of Bardow, comes to suspect that his new neighbours, the Robinsons, have committed a crime. As he investigates he starts to uncover a conspiracy - not of some sinister cult or powerful elite but of ordinary people, people who refuse to be 'managed' any more.
