While preparing for a ball in Rio de Janeiro, where he would meet his beloved, graduate Duarte is interrupted by the unexpected visit of Major Lopo Alves, who intends to recite a tedious dramatic manuscript to him for hours on end. Between dreamlike fantasy and reality, in this short story, Machado plays with the contrasts between wonderful plots produced by the absurdity of dreams and the boredom of a tedious text.
