#1 Your spine is an important part of your body, and it provides you with structure and support. It is also a protector, serving as a bony barrier between your spinal cord and nerves.

#2 The spine is made up of 33 spool-shaped bones called vertebrae. Each vertebra is about an inch thick and stacked one on top of another. The vertebrae are supported by ligaments and connected to muscles that extend throughout the body.

#3 The spine is made up of four main regions: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral. The cervical spine is the most flexible and extends the greatest amount, making it possible for you to nod your head yes. The thoracic spine is the least mobile and extends the least, but it does support most of your weight.

#4 A spinal disk has a soft, gel-like interior called the nucleus pulposus. The interior is encased by a tougher, rubbery exterior called the anulus fibrosis. The exterior is made of sheets of tissue called lamellae.
