The first of a series of Montgomery's novels written about Anne Shirley.
The story is about Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert who are siblings and live on Prince Edward Island. They wanted to adopt a boy to help on the farm but ended up with Anne.
After a precocious start she settles down and shines in her studies, the book follows her adventures and has a melancholy twist at the end.
